DURHAM, N.C.-In a battle of arch-rivals, the fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team made easy work of the seventh-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels (13-4) on Sunday cruising to a 7-0 victory at the Ambler Tennis Stadium to improve to 10-1 overall on the season. The win for Duke is its ninth in a row and now stand 1-0 in ACC action.
The match started out with North Carolina taking the early momentum as the Tar Heels cruised to an 8-1 victory at the No. 1 position as 29th-ranked Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline knocked off Duke's Tory Zawacki and Julia Smith.
Duke's No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams responded by winning, 8-4 and 8-6, respectively, to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 advantage. At the second slot, Amanda Johnson and Saras Arasu of Duke defeated Kendrick Bunn and Caitlin Collins, while at the third position Kristin Cargill and Jennifer Zika knocked off Lee Bairos and Jenna Long.
The Blue Devils took the momentum of winning the doubles point and cruised through singles action. Fifth-ranked Johnson, a senior from Bettendorf, Iowa, cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over 16th-ranked Mojzis at the No. 1 position to put Duke up 2-0. The bottom three singles slots then registered quick victories as Smith knocked off Sara Anundsen, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4, Arasu notched a 7-5, 6-3 win over Collins at No. 5 and Cargill had a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Bunn at the sixth slot.
Zika and Zawacki both continued singles win streaks as Zika won her eighth in a row and Zawacki won her ninth in a row. Zika picked up a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 victory over Bairos and Zawacki downed 81st-ranked Cline, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0.
With the victory, Duke receives one point towards the Carlyle Cup, a yearlong competition between North Carolina and Duke, which is sponsored by Carlyle & Co., of Greensboro, N.C.
"What I told the team after the match was that it was the most focused we'd played all year," said Duke Head Coach Jamie Ashworth. "The conditions were tough, it was cold out with a little bit of wind, and it's real easy to use that as an excuse. It was 7-0, but some of those scores were fairly close and I thought that after big points and big games, we were mentally tough. We didn't break at all. That was good to see. It wasn't a day where you could hit the ball really well, just because of the wind and stuff, so you had to compete well. You had to stay focused and we were able to do that really well."
Duke will next host N.C. State on Wednesday, March 24 at 5:00 p.m.
