Duke Blanks Virginia, 4-0, In ACC Tournament Quarterfinals

RALEIGH, N.C. - In search of its 16th ACC Championship in school history, the fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team blanked Virginia, 4-0, on Friday in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 1-0 lead with two quick victories in doubles action. The Duke tandem of Julia Smith and Tory Zawacki downed Mariko Fritz-Krockow and Kristin James, 8-4, while Amanda Johnson and Saras Arasu cruised to an 8-3 win over Dora Bechliwanis and Lauren Bruch at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively.
In singles action, Johnson put the Blue Devils up 2-0 as she cruised to 6-2, 6-1 victory over James at the No. 1 slot. The win for Johnson, a senior from Bettendorf, Iowa, was her 112th of her career to move her into tied for 10th place on Duke's all-time career wins list.
Shortly after Johnson's victory, two freshmen notched victories to clinch the match for the Blue Devils. At No. 2, Zawacki collected a 6-0, 6-1 win over James and at the No. 6 slot Kristin Cargill had a 6-4, 6-2 win over Shannon Stough.
After Duke clinched the team victory, the match was called with the Blue Devils leading all of the other singles matches. The Blue Devils improve to 18-3 overall, while Virginia concludes its season with an 11-12 record.
Duke will next play the winner of the third-seeded Florida State vs. sixth-seeded Wake Forest match on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
