BERKELEY, CALIF. ? Duke's Jennifer Zika and Tara Iyer both posted wins in their first match at the Cal Invitational women's tennis tournament Friday but fell in the second round to ranked opponents. Zika and Iyer are both competing in their first tournament this year.
Zika defeated Brigham Young's Sofia Holden, 7-6 (4), 6-1, 6-1. She put up a fight against 37th-ranked Sabrina Cappanolo of Arizona State, but lost 6-2, 0-6, 6-3. Zika moves into a round robin consolation, where she will face Brigham Young's Hanni Deters Saturday at 4 p.m. EDT.
In her first collegiate tournament, Iyer defeated Tina Razloznik of Arizona, 6-3, 6-2, in the Round of 32 but fell to second-seeded and 12th-ranked Suzi Fodor, 6-0, 6-1 in the Round of 16.
Iyer and Zika teamed up in the doubles competition, falling in the first round to Andrea Morgado and Goriann Lopez of Texas Christian, 9-7.
