CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Duke women's tennis team had a very successful day at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Women's Tennis Championships Friday, winning six of seven singles matches and four of five doubles matches. Seven Blue Devils advanced to the Round of 16 in singles and doubles action and will continue play at the North Carolina-hosted event Saturday.
Both Jennifer Zika and Jackie Carleton posted wins over players from conference foe Wake Forest. Zika, tied for the ninth seed in the tournament, defeated Blakeley Offutt, 6-3, 6-1, while fourth seeded Jackie Carleton earned a deciding 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ana Jerman. Sophomore Clelia Deltour, seeded fifth, defeated Charleston Southern's Maryann Tazi, 6-0, 6-1.
Freshman Tara Iyer picked up her second singles victory as a Blue Devil, downing East Tennessee State's Sylwia Ziolkowska, 6-4, 6-1, and junior Kristin Cargill rounded out Duke's singles wins with a 6-4, 6-2 advantage over Kelsey Linville of Davidson.
Freshmen Melissa Mang and Jessi Robinson both lost close matches to keep from advancing. Mang fell 7-6, 6-4, to USC's Natasha Vuckovic, and Robinson played Furman's Lauren Osborne through three sets, eventually losing, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Duke's doubles teams were equally as impressive as the singles performers. Top-seeded Daniela Bercek and Robinson, who are coming off a quarterfinal appearance at the Riviera/ITA All-American Tournament last weekend, defeated ACC opponents Arachavelata/Johnson from NC State without a problem, 8-3. Another Blue Devil seeded duo, Cargill and Carleton, playing at No. 6, came out ahead of ETSU's Batsula/Byrne, 8-4.
The pairs of Mang/Zika and Deltour/Iyer each posted victories over Kentucky teams. Mang and Zika defeated Maurer/Petrisko, 8-2, while Deltour and Iyer beat Sober/Winebrenner, 8-3. Two other Blue Devils were not as lucky against the Wildcats. Despite winning their first doubles match of the tournament, 8-0, senior Lauren Archer and junior Parker Goyer gave up an 8-0 decision to second-seeded Coventry/Schwenk of Kentucky.
Duke will be well represented in the Round of 16 in both singles and doubles. Action resumes Saturday with players vying for bids to the ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships, held Nov. 3-6 at Ohio State.
