NORFOLK, VA. ? The No. 3 Duke field hockey team recorded its fourth shutout of the year Saturday, downing William & Mary, 4-0. Four different Blue Devils scored goals, and sophomore goalie Caitlin Williams earned her third shutout this season.
“I thought we came out really strong,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “We could have done better in the second half, but William & Mary also really picked it up in the second half. Our girls had a good opportunity to play today.”
Freshman Julie Tromp led the Blue Devils to a dynamic start, drawing the goalkeeper out of the net and nailing a pass from freshman Laura Suchoski into the goal with only 58 seconds gone off the clock. Senior Katie Grant upped the score to 2-0 with the time still under 10 minutes in the first half, converting a pass from senior Nicole Dudek at 8:49 to score her 14th goal of the season.
Sophomore Rachel Link netted her first career goal with 10 minutes left in the first half to give Duke a 3-0 halftime advantage for the fourth time in the last five games. Junior Cara-Lynn Lopresti, tied for second on the team in assists this season, added the assist on Link's goal.
Duke overpowered the Tribe in the first half, out-shooting them 12-0. In the second half, William & Mary earned six shot opportunities but couldn't convert any of them. The final goal of the game came from Duke sophomore Marcy Burns on a penalty corner 1:30 shy of the 20-minute mark in the second half. Grant and Lopresti earned assists on the goal.
The Blue Devils out-shot their opponent, 20-6, and led 12-4 in penalty corners. Williams played the full 70 minutes in goal, recording three saves on six shots.
Duke returns to action at Old Dominion Sunday at 1 p.m. The Blue Devils are looking to avenge a 5-2 loss to the Monarchs in Durham in September.
“Old Dominion comes out really strong at the beginning,” said Bozman. “Being able to score in the first minute today shows us that we are prepared to come out strong early on tomorrow.”
