LOS ANGELES -- For the second straight year Duke sophomore Clelia Deltour defeated a Georgia Tech player to advance from prequalifying to qualifying on the road to making the main draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Tournament. Deltour defeated Lyndsay Shosho, 6-4, 6-1, Sunday at UCLA to record her third prequalifying win necessary to move on to the qualifying tournament.
Deltour, ranked 99th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason rankings, registered wins over Macall Harkins of Illinois and Utah's Emily Kwok Saturday to play in the quaterfinal round Sunday against Shosho. She will join senior teammate Jackie Carleton in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Tuesday to play in the qualifying tournament. Carleton, ranked 68th, was selected to the two-day qualifying tournament without having to play in prequalifying.
Freshman Jessi Robinson also made it to Sunday's quarterfinals, but will not be one of the eight individuals advancing to the qualifying tournament. After posting wins over DePaul's Beatrix Csordas and Boston's Gina Sabatino, Robinson fell, 6-2, 6-4, to Kim Hartman of Nebraska.
Deltour and Carleton must win three matches in the qualifying round in order to advance to the main draw, held Thursday through Sunday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades. Robinson will team up with junior Daniela Bercek to play as the top-seeded doubles pair in the qualifying tournament. The duo is ranked 11th in the ITA preseason poll.
