PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. -- Duke sophomore Clelia Deltour was on a roll early Tuesday, picking up her first win in the qualifying draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Women's Tennis Tournament, but a loss in the following round will keep her from advancing to the main draw. Deltour's victory over Jessica Leitch of Arizona State 6-3, 6-2, was her fourth win overall in the 10-day All-American tournament, which began with pre-qualifying Saturday.
Fourth-seeded Carolin Walter of Baylor knocked Deltour out of the running, 7-5, 6-1, in the Round of 32. Senior Jackie Carleton, who was selected to start play in the qualifying draw, also competed Tuesday, falling to Dianne Matias of USC, 6-3, 6-1, in the Round of 64.
Carleton won a consolation match over William & Mary's Megan Muth, 6-3, 6-3, before teaming up with freshman teammate Melissa Mang on the doubles court. The pair gave up an 8-6 decision to Elena Gantcheva and Sharon Marin of UNLV.
No Duke players will advance from the qualifying tournament to the main draw, but Duke junior Daniela Bercek, a first-year transfer from UCLA, was selected to begin play in the main draw, which begins Thursday. Fifth-ranked Bercek will compete in the singles bracket as well as teaming up with freshman Jessi Robinson in doubles competition. Robinson and Bercek are the 11th-ranked pair in the ITA preseason rankings.
The main draw of the All-American Tournament will be held Thursday through Sunday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
