FAIRFAX, VA. ? The Duke swimming and diving team wrapped up the first day of the three-day Patriot Invitational at George Mason University Friday with the women holding a seven-point lead over UMBC for the top position and the men in fourth place.
Senior Katie Ness swam a season-best 2:04.4 to win the 200 IM finals, and Ness, junior Jackie Rodriguez, freshman Emily Kelly and senior Julia Lewis teamed up to claim the 400 medley relay title in 3:54.19. Freshman Nick Campisano finished fourth on the one-meter diving board, and Kelly and Rodriguez both claimed top-five finishes in the 500 freestyle.
Sophomore Danielle Spearman and senior Nora Stupp swam close fourth and fifth place races, respectively, to join Ness as three Blue Devils in the top five of the 200 IM. After setting a career-best 1:54.75 in the 200 IM preliminaries, sophomore Scott Champagne went on to finish fifth in the event finals. Overall, Duke had eight individuals advance to the finals of the seven events that had final competitions Friday.
Action resumes Saturday with preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. and finals beginning at 6 p.m. at George Mason's Aquatic and Fitness Center.
