DURHAM, N.C. ? Senior Carolyn Ford, senior Carmen Bognanno and junior Rachel-Rose Cohen of the Duke University Women's Soccer team were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III squad on Thursday, which was selected in a vote by the College Sports Information Director's of America (CoSIDA).
Cohen was named to the first team and will now move on to the national ballot to be selected for Academic All-America, while Ford earned second team and Bognanno earned third team accolades.
A product of San Diego, Calif., Cohen has led the Blue Devils on the defensive end all season starting all 18 contests. Cohen registered her first assist of the season and third of her career in the final regular season contest against Miami. Over her career, Cohen has started 62 of 63 matches for the Blue Devils. She owns a 3.83 grade point average and is majoring in biological anthropology and anatomy.
Receiving the honor for the second straight year was Ford, who is a native of Bethesda, Md. A psychology along with a markets and management certificate major, Ford owns a 3.40 grade point average in her final year with the Blue Devils. The 2005 ACC Defensive Player of the Year has led Duke to 10 shutouts on the defensive end and has allowed only nine goals all season long. Last year, Ford was named ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-District III.
Also earning All-District III honors for the second year in a row was Bognanno. A midfielder from St. Louis, Mo., Bognanno has started all 18 matches on the year for the Blue Devils while collecting three assists. She has started 70 career contests for Duke and owns a 3.48 grade point average, while majoring in psychology and cultural anthropology.
The Blue Devils (13-4-1) will next play top-seeded and third-ranked North Carolina in the semifinals of the ACC Championship on Friday at 5:00 p.m., at the SAS Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C.
