COLUMBUS, OHIO ? Duke senior Jackie Carleton passed through the first round of the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Thursday, defeating Caitlin O'Keefe of The Ohio State University, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to Friday's Round of 16.
Carleton will face third seeded Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Kristi Miller of Georgia Tech Friday. Miller defeated Stanford's Anne Yelsey in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to move on. The women's singles matches will follow men's singles and doubles and women's doubles and will start after noon Friday.
Carleton is appearing in the national indoors for the second time in her career, but the 2004-05 transfer from UCLA is representing Duke for the first time. She improves to 7-3 in singles play in the fall season and has won six of her last seven matches.
Carleton is the only Duke representative at nationals, but she will not be the only Blue Devil competing Friday. Her teammates will head to North Carolina for the annual Kitty Harrison Invitational, beginning with doubles at 8 a.m. Duke will play singles matches at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
