CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? The Duke women's tennis team enjoyed a successful first day at the North Carolina-hosted Kitty Harrison Invitational Friday. The Blue Devils swept its three doubles contests with Minnesota and posted three wins in singles over Virginia and two over Wake Forest in the hidden dual format tournament.
Duke started the day with three doubles wins over Minnesota. Melissa Mang and Jennifer Zika topped Nischella Reddy and Ida Malmberg, 8-3, and Kristin Cargill and Jessi Robinson followed suit, defeating Danielle Mousseau and Mariana Spilca, 8-3. Clelia Deltour and Tory Zawacki teamed up to down Megan Steiger and Jenna Tellefsen, 8-3. Zawacki was competing for the first time since she was injured in the first tournament of the 2005 fall season, the William & Mary Invitational.
The Blue Devils saw action against two Atlantic Coast Conference teams in singles, first taking on the Cavaliers of Virginia. Tara Iyer improved her fall record to 4-2 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Rachel del Priore, and Mang topped Kristen James, 6-1, 7-5. Deltour pulled ahead of Lori Stern, 6-2, 5-7 (10-5), to record her eighth singles win of the fall season. Cargill fell in a tiebreaker, 2-6, 7-6 (10-6) to Douglas Wink, and Parker Goyer put up a hard fight against Amanda Rales, eventually losing 6-1, 1-6 (10-5). Lauren Archer fell, 6-3, 6-0 to Lindsey Pereira.
Wake Forest grabbed four wins over the Blue Devils, but Robinson and Cargill both earned victories. Robinson posted a 6-2, 7-5, win over Ana Jerman, while Cargill won, 7-6, 6-4 against Christina Tara. The Deacons' Ashlee Davis, Alex Hirsch, Jenna Loeb and Sierra Poske defeated Iyer (6-4, 6-1), Zika (6-2, 6-4), Goyer (6-3, 206, 11-9) and Archer (6-2, 6-0), respectively.
The Blue Devils return to action Saturday with doubles matches against Furman at 9 a.m. and Virginia Tech at 10:30 a.m. At 1 p.m. Duke will take on North Carolina in singles.
