CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? The Duke women's tennis team cruised on the second day of the North Carolina-hosted Kitty Harrison Invitational Saturday, winning five of six doubles matches and four of six singles matches. The Blue Devils swept the doubles competition with Virginia Tech, won two of three against Furman and defeated four UNC singles opponents in the hidden dual match tournament.
Duke started the morning against Furman in doubles. The combinations of Tara Iyer and Tory Zawacki and Lauren Archer and Clelia Deltour each picked up wins over Bonnie Baird and Shannon Moore (8-3) and Natasa Manojlovic and Lauren Tomory (8-2), respectively. Melissa Mang and Jennifer Zika fell, 8-4, to Marti Morris and Laura Gioia, but the pair did not stay down for long.
Returning to the doubles court against Virginia Tech, Mang and Zika topped Inga Beerman and Jessica Long, 8-4. Kristin Cargill and Jessi Robinson followed suit, downing Anat Elezari and Ashley James, 8-3, as did Deltour and Zawacki over J.J. Larsen and Jessica Brouwer (8-2).
Hot off their doubles victories, the Blue Devils headed into the singles competition with UNC. Iyer, Zika, Mang and Archer each recorded wins, though Robinson gave up a close call to Austin Smith (7-6, 6-2), and Parker Goyer lost a battle to Meg Fanjoy (2-6, 6-3 (10-8)). Iyer defeated Caitlin Collins, 6-2, 7-5, Zika topped Charlotte Tansill, 2-6, 6-3 (10-7), Mang downed Tanja Markovic, 6-1, 6-0, and Archer beat Alex Jurewitz, 6-1, 7-5.
So far in the tournament, the Blue Devils are 8-1 in doubles competition and 7-5 in singles. Duke will face a combination of East Tennessee State and Marshall competitors in 8 a.m. doubles Sunday and will finish by playing Miami in doubles at 9:30 a.m.
