DURHAM, N.C.- The fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team made quick work of Old Dominion (6-5) on Wednesday afternoon in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center as the Blue Devils cruised to a 7-0 victory over the Lady Monarchs to improve to 5-1 on the season.
"We hadn't played a match in 11 days now, which is really unusual for us during the season," said Duke Head Coach Jamie Ashworth. "We are more talented than Old Dominion so I talked with them about not giving Old Dominion any kind of confidence. The longer they hang around you start to get close matches. If we could get up on them and put them away, right away, then we wouldn't be in that situation and we did a good job of that."
Duke kicked off the doubles competition by cruising to a 26-minute victory at the second slot as the Blue Devil duo of Katie Blaszak and Tory Zawacki downed Larissa Santos and Barbara Costa, 8-0. Blaszak and Zawacki allowed the Old Dominion pair to reach 40 only one time in the match. Then at the third position, the Blue Devil tandem of Parker Goyer and Clelia Deltour won six out of the last seven points to defeat Linda Garder and Barbara Kerner, 8-4, to clinch the doubles point for Duke. Goyer and Deltour improve to 5-0 in dual match action on the season.
At the top slot, Old Dominion's team of Kerstin Endlich and Fernanda Luiz downed Kristin Cargill and Jennifer Zika, 8-5, to close out the doubles competition.
Duke came out hot in singles as the Blue Devils won the first set in all of the six matches very quickly. Leading the Duke charge was Deltour, a freshman from Savigny sur Orge, France, who collected a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Luiz. She improved to 5-1 in dual match play and 17-5 overall on the season. Then, Zika gave Duke a 3-0 advantage as she blanked Santos, 6-0, 6-0.
At the top slot, Blaszak improved to 6-0 in dual match play as she downed Endlick, 6-2, 6-0, to give the Blue Devils a 4-0 lead. A native of Fairfax, Va., Blaszak is playing the best tennis of her collegiate career as she owns an 11-3 overall singles record. Duke received another victory at the fifth position as Zawacki cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kerner.
Playing in her first dual singles match of the season, Goyer knocked off Garder, 6-2, 6-0, at the sixth slot. A product of Birmingham, Ala., Goyer improved to 17-7 in her singles career. Cargill, a sophomore out of Atlanta, Ga., closed out the match with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Costa.
The Blue Devils will next hit the road for two key non-conference matches at 20th-ranked Notre Dame on Feb. 18 and at fourth-ranked Northwestern on Feb. 20. The match on Feb. 18 is at 3:30 p.m. and then will play at 11:00 a.m. on Feb. 20.
