BLACKSBURG, VA.- Head Coach Jamie Ashworth notched his 200th career victory at Duke on Thursday as the fifth-ranked Blue Devils opened Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) action with a 7-0 victory over Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. Duke improves to 7-2 on the season and 1-0 in ACC play, while Virginia Tech falls to 3-4, 0-3.
"This was a nice win for us," said Ashworth. "I was looking at our travel schedule and with our flight problems coming back from Northwestern it was good to get a 7-0 win and get out. Some people stepped up for us today and we played well."
Ashworth is in his ninth year with the Blue Devils and owns a career record of 200-32, which is a remarkable 86.2 winning percentage.
"It is really nice to win 200," said Ashworth. "It says a lot about our players we have had here over my nine years. We have had a lot of talented players as well as some very good assistant coaches that have helped Duke be successful."
Duke jumped out to a 1-0 lead early after winning the doubles point as the Blue Devils won at the second and third positions. The Duke tandem of Saras Arasu and Kristin Cargill knocked off Kate Harrington and Ashley James, 8-3, at the second position, while Parker Goyer and Clelia Deltour defeated Meredith Holmes and Bethan James, 8-3, at the third slot. Virginia Tech pulled out a 9-7 victory at the top position as Anat Elazari and Jessica Long defeated Jackie Carleton and Tory Zawacki, 9-7.
The Blue Devils continued their excellent play into singles cruising to three quick victories at No. 2, 4 and 5. Deltour, a freshman from Savigny sur Orge, improved to 19-6 on the season with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over A.James at the second slot. Then, Zawacki notched a 6-4, 6-1 win over Harrington at the fifth position. Zawacki, a sophomore from Union, N.J., won her second straight dual match and the victory was a little extra special since it came against her sister's, Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods, team. Zawacki-Woods is the head coach of Virginia Tech.
Then at No. 4, Cargill downed B.James, 6-4, 6-1, to clinch the victory for the Blue Devils. Cargill, a product of Atlanta, Ga., improved to 7-1 in dual match play.
Duke closed out the match with victories at the remaining singles courts. Lauren Archer made her first appearance of the spring notching a 6-1, 6-0 win over Holmes at No. 6, 42nd-ranked Katie Blaszak defeated Elazari, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1 and Arasu knocked off Long, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 3.
Duke will next host William & Mary on Mar. 2 at 4:00 p.m. and South Florida on Mar. 5 at 5:00 p.m.
