MADISON, Wis. - The eighth-ranked Duke women's tennis team knocked out 16th-ranked Texas A&M, 5-2, in the first round of the National Team Indoor Championship on Thursday in Madison, Wis. The Blue Devils will next play Miami on Friday at 4:00 p.m. (EST). Duke improves to 3-0, while Texas A&M falls to 1-3.
Duke jumped out to quick leads in all three doubles matches and went on to capture the important doubles-point to take a 1-0 lead. At the third position, Clelia Deltour and Parker Goyer downed Marisa Druss and Seva Iwinski, 8-3. Then, Duke's Jennifer Zika and Kristin Cargill defeated Anna Blagodarova and Tiffany Clifford, 8-4, to clinch the doubles point.
At the first slot, the Blue Devil duo of 42nd-ranked Jackie Carleton and Katie Blaszak led 4-2 early in the match, but the Texas A&M tandem of Anna Lubinsky and Helga Vieira rallied to tie the match at 6-6. The Blue Devils then won the next two points to clinch the match, 8-6.
With all the matches taking place at the same time, only three singles matches were played at one time with the No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 positions playing first. Texas A&M was able to even the match, 1-1, as Blagodarova defeated Deltour, 6-2, 7-5, at the third slot to kick off the singles competition.
The Blue Devils took back the lead, 2-1, after 96th-ranked Saras Arasu knocked off Druss, 6-2, 6-4, at the fifth position. Playing No. 1 singles for the second straight dual match for Duke, Blaszak came out and won the first set, 6-3, against 47th-ranked Vieira. In the second set, Vieira jumped out to a 3-1 lead and had a 4-3 advantage at one point before Blaszak won three consecutive games to win the match, 6-3, 6-4. A native of Fairfax, Va., Blaszak is now 3-0 in dual match action and her victory against the 47th-ranked Vieira is the second-best victory against a ranked opponent in her four-year career.
Once the next three singles matches were able to begin, Cargill of Duke took on Iwinski of Texas A&M at the sixth position. Iwinski won the first game, but Cargill responded to win the next six in a row to win the first set 6-1. A product of Atlanta, Ga., Cargill went ahead 2-1, but Iwinski battled back to even the match at 3-3. Cargill was able to clinch the match by winning three of the next four games and won the match 6-1, 6-4.
Texas A&M notched its second point of the match with a 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 victory at the second position as Lubinsky defeated 108th-ranked Zika. Tory Zawacki of Duke finished off Tiffany Clifford of Texas A&M, 7-6, 6-2, at the fourth slot to give the Blue Devils a 5-2 win.
