AUSTIN, TEXAS - The eighth-ranked Duke women's tennis team collected its fourth 4-3 victory of the season on Friday as the Blue Devils upended 15th-ranked Texas at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas. Duke improved to 8-4 overall, while Texas fell to 8-2.
"This was a very nice win tonight as it was our first outdoor match of the season," said Duke Head Coach Jamie Ashworth. "Usually, we struggle in the first outdoor match but I thought we played pretty well today."
Texas jumped out to an early lead as the Longhorns won two of three doubles matches to take the important doubles point. Duke jumped out and won at No. 3 as Kristin Cargill and Clelia Deltour defeated Kelly Baritot and Courtney Zauft, 8-4, but the Longhorns came back to win at No. 2 and then had the clinching victory at No. 1. At the second slot, Texas' duo of Petra Dizdar and Mia Marovic defeated Katie Blaszak and Saras Arasu, 8-5, and at No. 1 the 28th-ranked tandem of Katie Ruckert and Kendra Strohm knocked off Duke's Jackie Carleton and Jennifer Zika, 8-6.
In singles action, Duke took Texas' momentum right away by cruising to victories at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 to take a 3-1 advantage. At No. 4, Deltour got things started with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Courtney Zauft and then Cargill defeated Ristine Olson, 6-2, 7-6, at the fifth slot. Cargill, a product of Atlanta, Ga., won her fifth straight dual match and improved to 10-1 in dual play.
Duke sophomore Tory Zawacki continued her stellar play of late winning her third match in a row as she notched a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Baritot at the sixth position. Texas came back to pull off an upset at No. 1 as Dizdar collected a 7-5, 6-4 win over 35th-ranked Blaszak at the top slot, which cut the Blue Devil lead to 3-2.
Playing in her second dual match since Feb. 5, Carleton registered the clinching victory for Duke as she knocked off Strohm at No. 2, 7-6, 6-2. The win was Carleton's first in dual action this season. In the final match, Arasu fell, 3-6, 6-4, 2-6 to Marovic at the third position.
"It was a good victory for Jackie as she was coming off the tough loss to William & Mary," said Ashworth. "This will help her confidence heading into the rest of the season."
Duke will next travel to Arizona State on Mar. 14 for a 2:00 p.m. (EST) contest.
