DURHAM, N.C. - The 11th-ranked Hurricanes of the University of Miami continued their undefeated streak in the ACC on Saturday defeating 10th-ranked Duke, 4-3, in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C. The Hurricanes are now 7-0 in the conference in their first year as an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) school, while Duke falls to 11-5, 2-1 ACC.
Duke came out strong in the doubles play, winning two of the three matches. The Blue Devil tandem of Katie Blaszak and Jackie Carleton defeated Melissa Applebaum and Staci Stevens of Miami, 8-3, to secure the doubles point for Duke, after Clelia Deltour and Lauren Archer won their first match together on the season, defeating Juliette Mavroleon and Patricia Starzyk of Miami, 8-2.
Duke needed three of the six singles matches to come out on top, and won at the two and five spots with Carleton and Kristin Cargill winning, respectively. Miami took the one, three and six matches, and it came down to the No. 4 slot.
Deltour had the lead in the first set, but Starzyk battled back to win in a tie breaker 7-6(8-6). Starzyk took the second set as well to clinch a win for Miami, 6-4.
Duke will next host 32nd-ranked Florida State on Sunday at 12:00 PM.
