HARRISONBURG, VA. ? The Duke field hockey team emerged victorious from its first overtime test of the 2005 season Sunday, defeating No. 19 James Madison, 2-1. The win came without three Duke starters ? Katie Grant, Cara-Lynn Lopresti and Amy Stopford ? who wrapped up their final day of competition at the Junior World Cup in Chile Sunday, and just two days after the Blue Devils pulled out a 2-1 victory over third-ranked North Carolina on the road.
“I think we came out a little flat in the first half,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “They put a lot of pressure on us, but we gradually regrouped, and we came out strong in the second half. Then we played a really smart and skilled overtime.”
JMU took a 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman Ashley Walls just before halftime, but senior Nicole Dudek leveled the score with 23:53 left in the second period after rebounding a penalty corner shot from freshman Laura Suchoski.
Sophomore Shayna McGeehan came up with the game-winning goal, scoring 6:23 into sudden-death overtime. Dudek sent a short pass ahead to McGeehan, who beat JMU goalkeeper Lori Amico with a five-yard shot to the left corner.
Duke held an 18-10 advantage in shots and 14-5 in penalty corners. Senior Christy Morgan recorded her second straight win in goal, finishing with four saves.
Duke improves to 7-2 this season with nine straight games against ranked opponents. Junior Hilary Linton returned early from the Junior World Cup, where she represented Canada, to play for the Blue Devils Sunday. The team will welcome USA team members Grant, Lopresti and Stopford back for its games against Boston College and Harvard next weekend.
“This has really been a great experience for the 14 players who have been here without the Junior World Cup players,” said Bozman. They have been able to show the strength of this team and the ability to fight back and win close games.”
The USA finished seventh at the Junior World Cup by defeating South Africa, 4-2, Sunday in its highest finish in the history of the event.
Duke resumes play Saturday at 2 p.m. in its third ACC match of the 2005 season at Boston College before traveling to Harvard to compete at 1 p.m. Sunday.
