NEWARK, DEL. --
The Duke field hockey team downed Ohio State 3-1 Sunday to win the third game of Delaware's Blue Hen Classic and improve its 2005 record to 4-0. Three different Blue Devils scored goals, and the team did not allow a single shot opportunity to the Buckeyes in the first half.
"I thought starting out we really stuck to our game plan and had a spectacular first half," said head coach Beth Bozman. "We weren't as sharp in the second half, but we were changing things and experimenting a little bit with our lineup, and Ohio State also looked stronger in the second half."
Senior Katie Grant, who led Duke in scoring Saturday with four goals and an assist, converted a pass from junior Amy Stopford 12 minutes into the game to set the offensive tone. Freshman Marian Dickinson, who starred in her collegiate debut on Aug. 27 with three goals and an assist, scored off a rebound from her own shot at 23:06 to give Duke a 2-0 advantage. The Blue Devils' final goal came just over two minutes later when sophomore Marcy Burns converted another rebounded shot into a goal, marking the second time she scored this weekend.
Sophomore Caitlin Williams played the whole game in goal for Duke and held Ohio State scoreless for almost 63 minutes of play, but the Buckeyes' Yesenia Luces slipped one in at 62:55 to make the final score 3-1. Williams has only allowed two goals while playing the majority of four games for the Blue Devils this season.
Once again, Duke held a significant statistical advantage over its opponent, outshooting Ohio State 25-3 and attempting 14 penalty corners to the Buckeyes' four.
"I was very pleased with our defense," said Bostrom. "They really played a steady, controlled game."
Grant leads the team in scoring after tallying her sixth goal Sunday, while Dickinson's goal was the fourth of her short career. Duke now holds a 20-3 goal advantage over opponents after four games this season.
The Blue Devils return to Durham for their home opener against 2003 and 2004 national champion Wake Forest Saturday at 1p.m., matching up for their first regular season contest against the Demon Deacons since the national championship game last year.
"We feel good coming into our ACC games with four solid wins," said Bozman. "I think we have really developed as a team."
