Iyer Ends Run In Freeman Invitational Semifinal

LAS VEGAS ? After an impressive run at the competitive Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Invitational, in which she defeated the top-seeded and second-ranked player in the country to advance to the quarterfinal, Duke freshman Tara Iyer finally fell in the semifinal round Saturday, giving up a 6-2, 6-0, decision to No. 69 Celia Durkin of Stanford, the No. 1 team in the country.
Iyer, who won two matches Friday, including the upset of No. 2 Anne Yelsey of Stanford, defeated Carine Vermeulen of Southern California, 6-2, 6-3, in Saturday's quarterfinal before losing the semifinal match. She was joined in the tournament by Duke teammates Jackie Carleton, Melissa Mang and Jessi Robinson.
Robinson competed in the consolation round Saturday but fell to Vicki Jones of Tennessee. Jones and Robinson could have the possibility of a rematch next weekend, as No. 14 Duke travels to No. 19 Tennessee for its 2006 season opener.
Mang, who upset No. 15 Boglarka Berecz of second-ranked Florida Friday before falling in the second round, played an extra singles match Saturday, defeating Wendy Pilecka of Arizona State, 6-2, 7-6. Carleton lost in the second round Friday and did not play Saturday.
