LAS VEGAS ? Four Duke women's tennis players concluded play at the Freeman Memorial Invitational Sunday with the combination of senior Jackie Carleton and freshman Jessi Robinson capturing the consolation doubles title in a tiebreaker victory over freshman teammates Tara Iyer and Melissa Mang.
Carleton and Robinson defeated Laura Ganzer and Danielle Wiggins of South Carolina in the consolation semifinals, 8-3, while Iyer and Mang battled another South Carolina duo ? Gira Schofield and Natasa Vuckovic ? and pulled away, 8-4. The tight finals match ended up in a 9-8 victory for Carleton and Robinson.
The Blue Devils ended their stint in the three-day invitational with their doubles duel Sunday. The trip was highlighted by impressive singles performances by Iyer and Mang on Friday. Both unranked in the season's first poll, released Tuesday, Mang defeated No. 15 Boglarka Berecz, a member of the No. 2 Florida team, in the first round Friday, while Iyer upset top-seeded and second-ranked Anne Yelsey of No. 1 Stanford. Iyer advanced to the semifinal match Saturday before falling to eventual champion Celia Durkin of Stanford.
No. 14 Duke officially opens its 2006 season Sunday with an away contest at No. 19 Tennessee at 1 p.m.
