BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- For the second straight year, the Duke women's tennis team defeated Indiana to improve to 2-0 on the season. The No. 14 Blue Devils claimed all three doubles victories and won five of six singles matches Sunday to top the 32nd-ranked Hoosiers, 6-1, in Bloomington.
Duke got off to a powerful start in doubles with 10th-ranked Daniela Bercek and Jessi Robinson taking a dominating 8-2 win over No. 38 Sarah Batty and Laura McGaffigan. No. 41 Jennifer Zika and Melissa Mang clinched the doubles point for Duke, finishing second with an 8-5 decision against Sigrid Fischer and Brianna Williams. Junior Kristin Cargill and senior Jackie Carleton rallied from a doubles loss last weekend to win 8-4 over Alba Berdala and Cecile Perton.
In singles No. 6 Bercek again cleaned up at the No. 1 position, putting No. 98 Sarah Batty away first, 6-4, 6-1. Bercek holds the best singles record on the team with two dual victories in two spring matches and an overall 9-1 ledger. Freshman Melissa Mang also kept her dual-match record perfect with a 6-1, 6-1, victory over Berdala on court four.
Indiana pulled out its only win of the day against Cargill on court three in the third match to finish. Williams, who is 4-0 in singles this season, topped Cargill, 6-3, 6-3, to hand the Blue Devil her first loss of the season. But Robinson finished next, clinching the match for Duke with her first dual-match singles decision as a collegian. Robinson defeated Fischer, 6-2, 7-5, to decide the match with Duke standing 4-1 over Indiana.
Carleton and Zika continued to play with No. 27 Carleton defeating No. 100 Laura McGaffigan, 7-5, 6-3, on court two, winning at that position for the second straight week. Zika, playing singles for the first time this season, won in the only three-set match of the day. Zika topped Fischer, 7-5, in the first set before falling behind by the same score in the second. She rallied to win, 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (7).
“Jenny Zika and Jessi Robinson both had good wins, which will give them some confidence heading into next weekend,” said head coach Jamie Ashworth. “At the team indoors, we need everyone to be playing well and with confidence since they will be facing some of the best players in the country. We have the opportunity to prove that we are better than our 14th ranking this coming weekend.”
Duke is 2-0 entering one of the most challenging tournaments of its spring season next weekend. Duke was one of 16 teams selected to participate in the National Team Indoor Championships, held at the University of Wisconsin, Thursday through Sunday. Making its 17th appearance in the tournament, which features some of the top teams in the country, Duke will look to add a second National Team Indoor title to its list of accolades over recent years. The Blue Devils captured the championship in 2003 as one of only four teams to ever win at the tournament.
