DURHAM, N.C.? Led by six players in double-figure scoring, the sixth-ranked Duke Women's Basketball Team closed exhibition action on Thursday with a 96-47 victory over Premier Players at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C.
The Blue Devils jumped out to an 8-0 lead led by seniors Lindsey Harding and Alison Bales with three and five points, respectively and then went on a 14-0 run midway through the first half to open a 38-13 advantage.
As a team, Duke shot 47.7 percent from the field and led by as many as 31 points, 49-18, with 3:47 remaining in the half. At the end of the first stanza, the Blue Devils held a 53-23 lead as sophomore Abby Waner and Bales had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Bales also pulled down seven rebounds and blocked three shots, while hitting all four of her field goal attempts. Duke outrebounded Premier Players, 35-20, and forced 17 first half turnovers.
The Blue Devils used a pair of 13-0 runs in the second half to extend their lead to 55 points at 90-35 with five minutes remaining. Six different players scored during Duke's first 13-0 stretch, which occurred four minutes into the second half. Two minutes later, the Blue Devils equaled that run, highlighted by a steal by Wanisha Smith followed by a behind-the-back pass to Bridgette Mitchell for a lay-up on the fast break.
Bales finished the night with her second straight double-double as she notched 16 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four blocks. The 6-7 native of Dayton, Ohio also hit 6-of-7 from the field.
Bales and Abby Waner led all scorers with 16 apiece. Waner connected on 7-of-14 attempts from the field and pulled down seven rebounds in just 22 minutes on the floor. Bales and sophomore Carrem Gay led Duke with 10 rebounds each as the Blue Devils held a 60-32 advantage on the boards. Wanisha Smith dished out a game-high five assists.
Duke's two true freshmen combined for 27 points and 14 rebounds with Joy Cheek pouring in 14 points and gathering seven rebounds while Mitchell added 13 points and seven boards in her second game in a Duke uniform.
Duke will open the 2006-07 regular season on Saturday, Nov. 11 as the Blue Devils will host Northeastern at 2:00 p.m. It marks the first of four straight home contests to open the year.
