Duke vs. Premier Players Quotes
Duke Coach Gail Goestenkors
Opening Statement:
“I thought we had good energy once again. I think the team is really excited to get out and play. Overall, I thought our defense was good and we did a good job on the boards. I thought we shared the ball really well. I'm pleased with the overall performance and really ready to start the real games.”
On building momentum for the regular season:
“I think it's more important for us as coaches to get a feel for who plays well together in certain situations and to work on. We need to look at some of our zone, our traps, and our presses to see where we need to make some changes with the players' performance in different situations.”
On what the team needs to work on:
“Last game we did a good job taking care of the ball and tonight we had a couple of miscues that we need to do a better job with. We need to continue to make these easy shots and score with contact. We missed a lot of shots in the last game and this one was much better, but we still could have done a better job. So, we need to work on taking advantage of the opportunities that we're given.”
On Chante Black's condition:
“She practiced a little bit with us yesterday and today. She's doing about a quarter of the practice, so she's getting closer. We're hoping by Saturday we'll be able to get her some minutes. It just depends on if her knee swells up.”
Wanisha Smith
On her aggressiveness:
“I wanted to make sure I got to the free throw line. I was trying to attack as much I could, coming off screens. And my teammates did a great job of giving me the ball when I was cutting. My main focus is to attack and get the free throw line.”
Lindsay Harding:
On Exhibition games:
mes:“This is a totally different team from last year and the years before. So just trying to feel everything out and seeing what we are comfortable with. I also think its good for our freshmen.”
Joy Cheek
On playing with the team:
“You learn a lot as you go. Picking up the little things on the court; just talking before a free throw, things I didn't have to do in high school, I am picking them up as I go.”
On her playing style:
“Play hard for one. Coach G. always tells us to think ahead. I am still learning, so it is important for me to stay focused and know what's going on when I am sitting on the bench before I go into the game. That's the biggest thing, just knowing what's going on in the game.”
Premier Players Coach Brett McCormick
Thoughts on the game:
“The game was like it is every year: Duke always drills us, every year. Because they're always talented, they change defenses a lot, and they're well coached. No excuse, it wouldn't have mattered anyway, but that was our 11th game in 11 days, so maybe if we were a little fresher they may only beat us by 35 instead of 50.”
On Alison Bales' dominance:
“I've been watching her play since 7th grade, great player, great size, she's such a smart player. She just makes a major difference because if you beat your man to the basket, Alison is right there waiting on you to get the block. I expect a big year out of her.”
Last thoughts:
“I thank Duke for having us come in, I wish we could have given them a better game, but I wish them the best and they have a great squad and Coach Goestenkors and her staff do a great job.”
