DURHAM, N.C. - Mistie Williams scored 16 points while shooting 8-of-9 from the field as the No. 2 Duke women's basketball team defeated Virginia 88-65 Friday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke improved to 22-1 overall and 9-1 in the ACC while Virginia fell to 13-9 and 2-8, respectively.
Williams dominated the paint for the Blue Devils while Abby Waner sparked Duke off the bench by scoring 14 points including a pair of three-pointers.
Lindsey Harding paced Duke's offense by scoring 12 points and dishing out five assists against just one turnover. Chante Black joined Williams with a dominant inside game scoring 11 points, grabbing nine rebounds and rejecting four shots from the Cavaliers.
Black and Williams scored the Blue Devils first 10 points helping build an early 12-4 lead and after Abby Waner scored on a lay-up and three-pointer, Duke pushed the lead to double figures at 23-12 just over half way through the first half.
The Blue Devils maintained a two-to-one advantage as Emily Waner hit a three-pointer to make the game 34-17 and Laura Kurz hit a triple just before halftime to make the score 37-26 in Duke's favor at the break.
Virginia came out strong in the second half, outscoring Duke 9-4 to bring the game within six at 41-35 before the Blue Devils turned it on. Duke outscored Virginia 22-8 in the next five minutes as Abby Waner scored four straight and gave Duke its first 20 point lead at 63-43.
Jessica Foley then dominated the game for the next few minutes, scoring eight straight points for Duke to help keep the lead around the 20 point mark with seven minutes remaining. The game then turned into a free throw contest as Duke scored its next seven points from the line before Alison Bales hit a jumper at the 3:18 mark to give the Blue Devils an 84-65 advantage.
Emily Waner then hit a pair of long jumpers in the game's final minute to make the final score 88-65.
Emily Waner finished with seven points on a perfect 3-of-3 performance from the field while Bales added eight points and 11 rebounds and three blocks for Duke. Foley finished the game with eight points while Wanisha Smith and Kurz each finished with five points.
Next up for the Blue Devils is a likely top five matchup, the third inside Cameron Indoor Stadium in the past few weeks. Duke faces No. 6 Maryland Monday, who defeated No. 1 North Carolina last night. Both teams will be looking to keep pace with the Tar Heels as all three teams stand at 9-1 in ACC play. Duke defeated Maryland 86-68 in College Park, Md., on Jan. 8.
