COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Junior Kevin Arthofer lowered his own school record in the 100 breaststroke preliminaries Friday at the 2006 ACC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Maryland. Arthofer set the previous record in November 2004, swimming a 56.35 at the Patriot Invitational, but he bested that mark Friday with a 56.21, good enough for a spot in the evening's consolation finals, where he is seeded second.
Arthofer will be joined in the finals session by up to five teammates. Sophomore Scott Champagne and junior Jay Ashenfelter qualified for the bonus finals with career-best times of 4:04.78 and 4:09.33, respectively. Freshman Jordan Charles also made it to the bonus in the 100 breaststroke with his personal-best 57.92, and senior Billy Pearce and junior Alex Sidelnik will compete in the 100 backstroke bonus after Pearce posted a season-best 51.39 and Sidelnik, a career-best 51.58. Sidelnik also qualified as an alternate for the 100 butterfly bonus finals by touching in a career-best time of 50.47.
Eleven other career-bests were set Friday for a total of 17 in the entire third day's preliminary session: junior Jacob McCafferty (51.08), sophomore Garrick Berberich (51.89), freshmen Kyle Barrett (54.42) and Nick Schilling (54.44) and sophomore Jesse Sandberg (54.54) in the 100 butterfly; sophomore Matt Rinehart (1:43.02), freshman Adam Moody (1:44.79), sophomore Peter Osterland (1:45.62) and freshman Justin Mullen (1:47.12) in the 200 freestyle; freshman Andy Ward (1:02.23) and sophomore Brett Sauers (1:01.10) in the 100 breaststroke.
Finals for the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke along with the 400 medley relay will take place Friday evening beginning at 7 p.m.
