COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- For the second time in the same day, junior Kevin Arthofer broke his own school 100 breaststroke record, this time swimming a 56.14 in the consolation finals to score for the Blue Devils. Arthofer finished 11th overall in the event to lead the team on the third day of the ACC Championships at the University of Maryland Friday.
Five other Duke swimmers competed in finals Friday, with sophomore Scott Champagne and junior Jay Ashenfelter both setting career bests for the second time that day after doing so in the morning's preliminary round. Champagned finished 20th in 4:02.71 and Ashenfelter came in 22nd in 4:07.48.
In the 100 butterfly, junior Alex Sidelnik placed 22nd with his bonus final time of 50.57, and freshman Jordan Charles and senior Andy Storm rounded out the top 25 performances in the 100 breaststroke by swimming 58.49 (22nd) and 58.57 (23rd), respectively.
Senior Billy Pearce, Arthofer, Sidelnik and sophomore Ryan Packer closed the day with a season-best performance in the 400 medley relay. Touching in 3:23.79 and ninth place, the team improved this year's time by almost six seconds.
The ACC Championships conclude Saturday with preliminaries at 11 a.m. and finals at 7 p.m.
