DURHAM, N.C. ? The No. 10 Duke women's tennis team defeated Princeton, 6-1, Wednesday at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center to improve to 9-3 on the year and 4-0 in home matches this season. After losing the doubles point for the first time in 11 contests last week, the Blue Devils reasserted themselves Wednesday by taking the point in consecutive matches.
Duke mixed up its normal doubles pairings, putting Daniela Bercek with Jackie Carleton on court one, Melissa Mang with Jessi Robinson on court two and Jennifer Zika with Kristin Cargill on court three. Bercek and Carleton, playing together for the first time, set the tone with a quick 8-0 victory over Jessica Siebel and Ivana King at No. 1.
The freshman duo of Mang and Robinson kept up the pace by clinching the doubles point with an 8-4 win over Darcy Robertson and Joanna Roth, but the Tigers were able to pull out an 8-5 win on court three with Rankin Williams and Christine Kansky defeating Duke's Zika and Cargill.
Moving on to singles, three Blue Devils leapt out to 6-0 wins in their first sets, and each of the three finished off their opponents in successive order to clinch the match at 4-0. Robinson claimed a 6-2 second-set victory at No. 5 over Joanna Roth for the first singles win of the day, and Clelia Deltour, who has only seen action in three dual matches this year due to an injured wrist, followed at No. 6 with a 6-3 win over Kelly Stewart. Mang, playing for the second time at No. 2, remained undefeated at that spot in her clinching 7-5 decision over Jessica Siebel.
Princeton managed a win on court four, where Christine Kansky topped Duke's Zika, 6-3, 6-3, in the fourth singles match to finish.
Carleton and freshman Tara Iyer both started out with easy first-set victories, as No. 29 Carleton put up a 6-1 win over Darcy Robertson at No. 1, and Iyer downed Ivana King, 6-2, at No. 3, but the Princeton pair didn't give up easily. With the overall score already decided at 4-1 in the Blue Devils' favor, Robertson came out ahead 3-0 over Carleton in the second set. The Duke senior bounced back, and eventually took control with the score knotted at six, winning 7-6 after an 8-6 tiebreaker. The match at No. 3 followed a similar path, with Iyer eventually winning 7-6 (7-5).
Duke hits the road for a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference matches this weekend. The Blue Devils, who are 2-0 against the ACC this season, face Virginia Saturday at noon in Charlottesville, Va., and Virginia Tech Sunday at 10:30 a.m. in Blacksburg, Va. Duke's next home contest is Tuesday against No. 6 Florida, scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Ambler Tennis Stadium.
