DURHAM, N.C. -- Freshman Melissa Mang, ranked 122nd in the country, upset No. 87 Whitney Benik at the No. 3 position, ending the Florida freshman's 13-match win streak Tuesday, but it wasn't enough to lift the No. 12 Duke women's tennis team over No. 7 Florida. The Gators (13-1) defeated Duke, 4-1, giving the Blue Devils (10-5) their first home loss of the 2006 season at the outdoor Ambler Tennis Stadium.
Florida became one of only two teams in Duke's 15 matches this year to triumph in all three doubles matches with Benik and Alexis Gordon defeating No. 17 Daniela Bercek and Jessi Robinson, 8-4; Lolita Frangulyan and Diana Srebrovic beating Jackie Carleton and Kristin Cargill, 8-4; and Keri Robison and Nina Suvak topping Melissa Mang and Jennifer Zika, 8-2. The match pitted two strong doubles teams against each other as the Blue Devils lost the doubles point for just the third time this season, while Florida claimed its 13th doubles point in 14 matches.
The Gators jumped out to a 2-0 lead in singles when Frangulyan posted scores of 6-3 and 6-2 over Robinson at No. 6, but Mang put Duke on the board with her win over Benik at No. 3. On court one, 37th-ranked Gordon topped Duke's Bercek, 6-0, 6-2, and Florida's Suvak finished the scoring at No. 5 with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Cargill.
The other two matches were abandoned with No. 46 Boglarka Berecz leading No. 66 Tara Iyer, 6-1, 3-4, and Srebrovic leading Duke's Carleton, 6-4, 4-1.
The Blue Devils resume conference play Saturday when they host Boston College Saturday at noon and Maryland Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Ambler Tennis Stadium on Duke's West Campus.
