DURHAM, N.C. ? The 12th-ranked Duke women's tennis team earned its second 7-0 victory of the season Saturday, defeating Atlantic Coast Conference rival Boston College at the Ambler Tennis Stadium. The Blue Devils used a lineup containing five ranked singles players who combined to lose only 10 games while winning 58. Duke improves to 11-5, 4-1 in the ACC and 4-1 at home.
The Blue Devils got off to a solid start by taking the first two doubles matches and claiming their 13th doubles point in 16 matches. Melissa Mang and Jennifer Zika got the action started with an 8-1 decision over Alina Sullivan and Sarah Svoboda on court two. At the No. 3 position, junior Parker Goyer saw her first action of the 2006 season, pairing with freshman Tara Iyer to take down Gia Nasarrete and Sylvia Segedi, 8-3. Daniela Bercek and Jackie Carleton dropped a close match, 8-6, to Sasha Cherkasov and Lana Krasnoeolsky.
Duke didn't lose another set the rest of the match with six straight-set singles victories. Second-ranked Bercek won her first set, 6-0, and was up 4-0 when her opponent, Segedi, retired. No. 122 Mang followed, improving to 14-2 in dual matches and 3-0 at the No. 3 position with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Krasnoeolsky.
No. 29 Carleton, who owns the second-most singles victories on the team this season, posted her first win in three matches by topping Cherkasov, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 to clinch Duke's win. No. 108 Clelia Deltour, playing in her fourth match this season due to recovery from wrist surgery, finished next on court six, downing Lindsey Nash, 6-3, 6-0 to improve to 3-1 and 2-0 in conference play.
No. 66 Iyer and Zika wrapped up the Blue Devil action with Iyer defeating Svoboda, 6-0, 6-2 and Zika beating Nasarrete, 6-4, 6-2.
Duke returns to the Ambler Tennis Stadium Sunday to host another ACC opponent, Maryland, at 2 p.m.
