DURHAM, N.C. ? The No. 12 Duke women's tennis team improved its conference ledger to 5-1 Sunday with a 4-3 win over No. 37 Maryland, improving to 12-5 on the season and 5-1 in home matches. After losing the doubles point, victories at the top four singles spots pushed Duke to its win, but not until the final match. Coming off a 4-3 loss to No. 4 North Carolina Saturday, Maryland moved to 9-9, 2-5 in the ACC.
The Terrapins became just the fourth team to claim a doubles point over Duke this season, jumping out to a 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils, playing with three new doubles pairings, picked up a win at No. 2 with Jackie Carleton and Melissa Mang deciding a quick 8-2 contest over No. 54 Michal Amir and Jennifer Dent. The next two came almost as close as they could get as Daniela Bercek and Jennifer Zika fell 8-6 to No. 13 Marianne Baker and Ramona But, and Parker Goyer and Tara Iyer lost 9-7 to Julia Graca and Neda Mihneva.
Amir continued the Maryland momentum by downing Duke's 108th-ranked Clelia Deltour, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6, but No. 122 Mang came through on court three, defeating Dent, 6-3, 6-1, to put the Blue Devils on the scoreboard for the first time. The Terps stretched their lead, however, as Mihneva topped Duke's Zika, 6-2, 6-1 on court five.
With the match score at 3-1, Duke needed wins in all three singles matches left to take the match. No. 66 Tara Iyer kept the Blue Devils alive at No. 4 by posting a 6-2, 6-2 score against Veronika Subertova and second-ranked Bercek pulled through at No. 1, winning her first set against No. 59 But by a tight 7-6 before cruising to 6-2 in the second.
The focus turned to No. 2, where Carleton was in a three-set battle with No. 91 Baker. The Duke senior topped Baker 6-3 in the first set before giving up a 4-6 decision in the second. Carleton rallied, however, winning the third by an easy 6-1 to clinch the Blue Devil victory and help Duke to avenge a 4-3 loss to Maryland last year.
The Blue Devils continue a six-match homestand Wednesday with a 4 p.m. contest against cross-town rival and No. 4 North Carolina at the Ambler Tennis Stadium.
