DURHAM, N.C. ?The nation's top men's and women's collegiate tennis players will be competing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Championships starting today, as the Blue Devil duo of sophomore Amanda Granson and junior Melissa Mang and freshmen Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinszka are set for competition.
The National Indoor Championships is the second of three national tournaments for singles and doubles during the 2007-08 collegiate tennis season. The Ohio State University is hosting this week's championships at the Racquet Club of Columbus. Matches will begin at 11 a.m. ET on Thursday with first round doubles action followed by opening round singles. Play concludes at approximately 9:30 p.m.
Mang and Granson will take on the ninth-ranked tandem of Brook Buck and Kelcy Teft of Notre Dame in opening round play on Thursday, with the winner of that match set to take on 55th-ranked Kellie Schmitt and Karolina Soor of Marshall or 10th-ranked and No. 2 seed Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsofia Zubor of Tennessee on Friday.
Mang and Granson earned a bid to the National Indoor Championships by posting a 5-0 record in ITA Southeast Regional competition in October to take the regional title. The duo's run included an 8-4 win over the No. 2 pair in the country, Clemson's Ani Mijacika and Federica Van Adrichem, in a semifinal match.
Nze and Zsilinszka also reached the National Indoor Championship field by way of outstanding runs to the singles finals of ITA Southeast Regional play. The freshman twosome was set to square off against one another for the title, but due to injury the match was defaulted.
Nze will meet 40th-ranked Pavla Mesterova of Loyola Marymount in opening round play on Thursday, with the winner of that match set to take on 42nd-ranked Christy Striplin of Georgia Tech or sixth-ranked and No. 5 seed Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor on Friday. Nze holds a fall ledger of 7-2.
Zsilinszka will face 14th-ranked Laura Vallverdu of Miami on Thursday, with the winner of that opening round match set to go up against 60th-ranked and No. 7 seed Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech or Angela Dipastina of Ohio State in the round of 16. Zsilinszka has dropped just one decision in fall competition, as she owns a record of 14-1.
The ITA National Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field, which includes qualifiers from Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country during October, the ITA National Small College champions, the winners of the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships presented by Fila, and at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 10,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the Wilson/ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.
