Duke vs Temple Game Quotes
Junior Carrem Gay
How the team tried to pick up with the offense struggling?
“We just try to pick it up with our rebounding and the other things that give momentum, like defense. We try to draw from other positive things to uplift our offense.”
On the freshman fitting in and learning the system:
“They are doing just as well as I thought they would. Jasmine [Thomas] is able to take control and Krystal [Thomas] is able to be a dominate force in the post on defense and offense.”
How has the time down here been for you?
“I love the islands, who doesn't? You get to wear t-shirts in November. It's a good experience also time to bond with your teammates and I have Krystal as a roommate so I get to spend time with her.”
Freshman Jasmine Thomas
On the teams performance today?
“Just a well fought out, nitty, gritty game by both teams. Everyone was fighting to the end, everyone of course wanted to win. That's always their objective. We just had to focus on us, and do what we had to do at the end of the game; take care of the ball and get rebounds.”
Do you enjoy the pressure coming into the game and taking control?
“I enjoy that role but that's something will come more with experience, I still look for my teammates to help guide me. It's always a team effort no matter what; we're all trying to control the tempo.”
What are your thoughts about the team right now?
“I think we've come a long way since we've started and we're continuing to get better, which is great!”
Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
“I was pleased with the play from our first year's [Jasmine Thomas, Krystal Thomas and Karima Christmas]. They did a lot of very positive things in this game. I thought we had some pretty good leadership at times from Carrem [Gay] and Chante [Black], Wanisha [Smith], and a little bit of Emily [Waner] also just down the stretch. But obviously we need to be a whole lot better in certain areas. We just want to get better and improve and get after it. It doesn't matter who we play we have to play with a certain aggression and getting out rebounded is not something you can get in the habit of. So we gutted it out, I thought we made some smart decisions down the stretch. I thought that was the difference maker plays for us, but again you can't get outrebounded in no way and we have to get better in certain areas.”
Push at the end of the half?
“Yea that was a great surge, at it was lead by Karima Christmas the freshman, and I believe that Krystal [Thomas] made some key plays there too and Jasmine [Thomas]. It was great momentum going into the locker room and that's important. We've had some many different people step up in these games; we're just a great story because you never know who's going to do what. The scouting report might not be that effective, because you just don't know.”
In playing a lot of players:
“Well, I think to me I believe in playing a lot of players. I think it can be a long season as you head into March. So for me right now, it's finding who's on, whose effective each evening. As you saw Karima [Christmas] was totally key. Karima did not play a lot last game. I feel like we'll be the kind of team rotating 9,10,11 players. I think a large part of it will stay the very similar in terms of Abby [Black], Chante [Black], Wanisha [Smith] and Carrem [Gay] and some of those players but I think you'll see others float in and learn how to do their thing and contribute.
The biggest factor in the win today:
“I think it comes from an intangible; I thought grit and smarts down the stretch were the difference for us. I don't think it was anyone person. I think it was an attitude about taking care of the ball an attitude about getting the ball in the right places. I thought our game management from the stand point of the players; the player management piece was very, very good.”
