Durham, N.C. ? Jay Lapidus and the Duke men's tennis team added three players to next year's squad, including two blue chip recruits out of New Jersey and a top-five player from Germany. David Holland, Luke Marchese and Torsten Wietoska each signed national letters of intent to play for the Blue Devils next season.
"Torsten, Luke, and David make up a stellar recruiting class," said Lapidus. "These are the type of student athletes who will bring bring success to our program both in the classroom and on the court. We look forward to their arrival, and I am confident their presence will continue to take our program to new heights."
Holland is a five star, blue chip player out of Pennington, New Jersey. He is rated as the No. 10 player in the latest TennisRPI rankings (11/1) and No. 17 in the College Recruiting List rankings (11/20). He is the No. 2 rated player in New Jersey and the No. 3 player in the Middle Atlantic Region. He has a 47-17 career record, including a 14-3 mark against five-star players and a 29-0 record against players ranked 4-star or below. He won the singles championship at the ITF International Hard Court Championships in Allenwood, N.J. back in August as well as the L4 Sectional B18 Championship in Wexford, Pa. last January.
In his junior year at Princeton Day School, Holland went undefeated at 22-0, won the prep state singles championship and was named a National High School All-American. It was his second straight state title as he went 17-0 to claim the championship in his sophomore season. He was 20-2 as a freshman, losing in the state championship match.
Marchese is a five star, blue chip player out of Summit New Jersey. He edged out Holland as the top-ranked player in the state and the Middle Atlantic Region. He was ranked as high as No. 6 in the TennisRPI rankings (10/11) and is No. 11 on the latest College Recruiting Lists. He has a 46-20 career record, including an 18-1 mark against five-star players. He won the singles championship at the USTA National Opens in Waco, Texas last February. Marchese currently attend Summit High School.
Wietoska comes to Duke from Van der Meer Tennis Academy in Hilton Head Island, S.C. He originally is from Leer, Germany. He was ranked as high as No. 1 in the TennisRPI rankings on May 3 and was No. 2 on the College Recruiting List on March 13. He was the U16 German Champion in 2005. He has also won championships at the ITF Baton Rouge and ITF Destin tournaments in 2006.
