CARY, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team had its ACC Championship run halted in the quarterfinals, falling 4-0 to No. 7 Wake Forest Friday morning at the Cary Tennis Park.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wake Forest earned the doubles point with matching 6-3 triumphs on courts one and two.
- On court two, Mets Rottgering and Kacper Szymkowiak downed Dylan Long and Teddy Truwit. The Wake Forest pair took leads of 3-0 and 5-1 before Long and Truwit fought back with a break and hold to close the gap to 5-3, but the Demon Deacons served out for the win.
- Wake Forest's No. 2 team of Dhakshineswar Suresh and Andrew Delgado topped Duke's No. 13 pair of Cooper Williams and Pedro Rodenas. Williams and Rodenas slipped behind 4-1 before closing to 4-2 and 5-3, but could not register a break to pull within one game. Â
- Wake Forest pushed its lead to 2-0 on court six, where Joaquin Guillermo defeated Saahith Jayaraman, 6-2, 6-3. After a 1-1 tie in the first set, Guillermo went on a hold-break-hold run to take a 4-1 advantage. Jayaraman got a game back, but a hold and break ended the set. In the second set, Guillermo turned a 2-2 tie into a 5-2 lead and served out for the victory.Â
- Seconds later, it became a Demon Deacon 3-0 lead on court two, where No. 60 Rottgering defeated No. 49 Williams, 6-2, 6-4. Rottgering took a quick 2-0 lead, but Williams got a game back to trail 2-1. Rottgering answered with a hold-break-hold run to take control of the opening set. In the second, Rottgering again took a 2-0 lead with Williams coming back for a game. Williams closed to within one again at 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4, but could not get the break he needed to force a tie as Rottgering held on for the triumph. Â
- Wake Forest clinched the match on court one as No. 30 Suresh topped No. 36 Rodenas 6-3, 6-4. With the first set even at 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3, Suresh held, broke and held to take it. In the second, the set was even at 2-2 before Suresh broke and held to take a two-game lead. Rodenas got a game back to trail by just one at 4-3 and 5-4, but Suresh served out for the match.Â
