Duke Coach Gail Goestenkors
On Wake Forest...
“I thought Wake Forest did a great job. They got Ali (Alison Bales) in foul trouble. They kept coming at us; they never gave up. I've watched a lot of tape, and I felt like they were a team that wouldn't give up. They're young, and they just keep getting better and better. I give them a lot of credit.
On Duke's performance today...
Obviously, it was not our best effort. I think we had a little bit of a letdown from the last game. I was more proud of our effort in the second half, particularly on the boards. We were down in boards at halftime, and that's unacceptable. So I thought we did a better job in the second half on the boards, and we did what we had to do to come away with a win.”
Wake Forest Coach Mike Petersen
On Duke and the game in general...
“They're (Duke) a great team. They're very veteran. I thought our players did a great job today defensively. We out-rebounded them for the half, but that got a little away from us. They hurt us on the boards in the second half. Defensively, I thought we were pretty good. On the other hand, and this has been sort of an issue for us, we just have to make open shots. We had open shots, and to beat a team like Duke we have to make a really high percentage of our open shots. We left a lot of our open shots outside the rim today.”
On Wake Forest's first-half turnovers...
“One of the things we talked about in practice was the worst thing that could happen in a trapping situation?and that's where most of the turnovers came?is a five-second count. If we would have taken a five-second count every time, they don't get 15 points off turnovers. We lost our composure a little bit, and that's the nature of running around out there with mostly freshmen and sophomores against a veteran team that's ranked No. 1 in the country. Honestly, I thought we played better than to be down 15 (at the half). We missed a ton of open shots. If we make those shots and hold on to the ball a little better, all of a sudden it's a closer game.”
On Wake Forest's defensive effort...
“I thought for the most part we did a good job keeping them in front of us. Harding got loose on us some. She's really good. She got loose and got to the rim and broke us down. Where they're (Duke) so good is, when they penetrate?especially Harding when she gets on the bounce you have to help?and they finish really well. For the most part we kept them in front of use. I thought our bigs did a super job on Bales and Gay. We doubled down on Bales a bunch, and we made good decisions on when to go.”
