DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 11 Duke women's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over 66th-ranked Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils improved to 3-1 (1-0 ACC) after winning its ACC opener, and handed the Hokies (5-1, 0-1 ACC) their first loss of the season.
Duke swept the doubles point for the second consecutive match to go into singles competition with a 1-0 advantage. Senior Daniela Bercek and sophomore Melissa Mang defeated Inga Beermann and J.J. Larson at No. 1 (8-5), before sophomore Jessi Robinson and freshman Elizabeth Plotkin combined for a win over Jessica Long and Abbey Walker at No. 2 (8-4) to clinch the point for the Blue Devils.
At No. 3, senior Tory Zawacki and freshman Amanda Granson posted an 8-6 victory over Ashley James and Jessica Brouwer.
Singles competition saw all matches end in straight sets, as Mang continued her stellar play at the No. 2 spot to get Duke started by posting a 6-0, 6-0 win over James, putting the Blue Devils up 2-0.
Senior Clelia Deltour followed suit, recording a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Walker at No. 6, before Plotkin clinched the victory for Duke with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Karina Porushkevich at No. 3.
Zawacki and Granson both posted singles on the day, as Zawacki defeated Larson (6-4, 6-3) at No. 5 and Granson defeated Long (6-3, 6-4) at No. 4, while Bercek fell at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 7-5, to Beermann.
“For our first ACC match I thought we put forth a good effort,” said Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth. “Our doubles play is getting better. We're trying to become more disciplined and that is something that we'll definitely work on this week heading into the match at Florida. After the match we talked about playing doubles with a sense of urgency and we'll continue to work on that.
In singles, Melissa did a great job. One thing we try to do after the doubles point is try to get a quick singles win, and Melissa has been able to do that for three matches in a row now. She's playing better and better each match.”
Up next for the Blue Devils will be a tough road contest versus No. 4 Florida in Gainesville on Feb. 24. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
