Upcoming Event: Women's Basketball versus Countdown to Craziness on October 3, 2025 at 7 p.m.

2/18/2007 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Duke Coach Gail Goestenkors
Opening Statement:
"I'm just so proud of my team; this was another great test for us and a tremendous atmosphere for women's basketball. We love playing in big games, we love playing in great environments. I can't say enough about my team and the way they handled themselves today. I thought it was a great game for women's basketball."
On the play of both teams:
"In the first half I thought both teams were hitting [their shots]. I didn't think our defense was bad, I just thought both teams were hitting tough shots. I give credit to Maryland, they have a fantastic team. I know when you play big games like this you learn a lot about yourself, so both us will continue to get better. "
On defensive ways to slow Maryland's game down:
"I wasn't upset with our defense at halftime because I truly felt like we were doing a pretty good job. In the second half I felt like we stepped it up just a little bit more and we changed our defense. I felt that was good for us to change things up. If Maryland gets comfortable with that you're doing defensively, they're so good and Brenda is such a great coach that they're going to take advantage. We needed to change things up so that they didn't get too comfortable."
On limiting Maryland's 3-point shooting ability:
"We wanted to make them put it on the floor. We didn't want to give them an open 3-pointer if we could help it because they are such an excellent 3-point shooting team. I'm not going to take full credit for them missing some of those shots. They got some open 3-pointers and we were fortunate that when they got those open looks that they missed some of them."
Maryland Coach Brenda Frese:
On Duke guard Lindsey Harding:
"If Lindsey Harding isn't player of the year, I don't know who will be. She has stepped up big against every opponent they have played. We had a game plan to contain her but she did a tremendous job."
On tonight's game:
"I thought we improved and got better from the last game. We're obviously disappointed in the result but in some areas I thought we were able to slow down their transition and contain Abby Waner and Wanisha Smith."
On Maryland's playing atmosphere:
"We are proud of the atmosphere we have created with two sellouts in one season. Our seniors should go away with a smile in terms of what they have created here at Maryland."
On Maryland's improving defense:
"We have made strides defensively, but we're not all the way there yet. We'll continue working hard."
On the upcoming game against Boston College:
"We know how important every game is. When we go to Boston College it will be senior night for them. We want to rebound from this game and learn from it. We need to prepare for Boston College because it will be a very important game for us."
On senior night:
"The expectations after you win a national championship are a lot higher, but I think you have to have perspective. Duke is playing with two great seniors and it's a difficult match-up. Shay Doron has put her heart into everything that we have done. We have to continue to improve and we want a chance to get better."
