CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Duke men's swimming team sits in eighth place after two events at the 2007 ACC Championships, as the Blue Devils competed in the 800 freestyle and 200 medley relays on Wednesday evening at the University of North Carolina's Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Blue Devil 800 freestyle relay team of freshman Sean Smith, seniors Jay Ashenfelter and Jacob McCafferty and junior Scott Champagne finished in a Duke season-best 6:50.98. That time notched the team an eighth-place finish, as the four contributed 22 points to Duke's overall team score.
Smith's leadoff split of 1:43.55 is a Duke team-best for the 200 freestyle, as well as a career-best for the freshman.
Duke's 200 medley relay team of freshmen David Hahn, Eric Ness and David Carlson and senior Kevin Arthofer touched in 1:32.86, for a ninth-place finish. The four contributed 18 points to the Blue Devils' team score, as they set a team season-best for the event.
Duke finished day one of ACC Championship action in eighth place with 40 points. Florida State and Virginia are tied for first place with 74 points apiece, while host North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Clemson each tallied 60 points for a third-place tie.
The 2007 ACC Men's Swimming Championships will be held on Feb. 21-24, with preliminaries starting each day at 11 a.m., and finals set to begin at 7 p.m. Exclusive coverage of the ACC Men's Swimming Championship will be available on www.ACCSelect.com for fans to watch live at 7 p.m. ET through the final day of action.
