DURHAM, N.C. - Matt Danowski and Zack Greer combined for five goals and six assists and Duke limited Delaware to just two goals through three quarters of action as the fifth-ranked Blue Devils defeated the 12th-ranked Blue Hens, 12-6, on Friday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils improve to 7-2 on the year while the Blue Hens fall to 6-3.
Duke's Brad Ross got the Blue Devils off on the right foot with two goals in the first six minutes of play, scoring an unassisted goal at the 13:26 mark and then a second tally from Danowski at the 9:48 mark. Just 34 seconds after Ross' second goal, Max Quinzani scored to push Duke's lead to 3-0. Danowski and Peter Lamade both found the back of the net in the final 1:37 of the opening quarter to give the Blue Devils a 5-0 advantage.
In the second quarter, Greer scored from Ross with 1:44 remaining and then assisted on a goal by Mike Catalino at the 1:17 mark to make the score 7-0. The Blue Hens got on the board with 34 seconds left in the period with a goal by Dan Deckelbaum, but Duke took an 8-1 lead into halftime when Danowski fed Ned Crotty for a behind-the-back goal with just one second on the clock.
Greer scored twice and Danowski once as the Blue Devils scored the first three goals of the third period to claim an 11-1 lead with less than three minutes remaining. Delaware then used a 4-0 spurt to climb within 11-5 on Jordan Hall's unassisted goal at the 11:42 mark of the fourth quarter. Crotty and Delaware's Nick LoManto would each score to account for the final margin.
Danowski finished the day with two goals and four assists to push his team-leading point total to 38 on the year. Now just 10 assists shy of becoming just the fifth player in ACC history with at least 100 goals and 100 assists in a career, Danowski moved into a tie for sixth place on Duke's all-time scoring list with 198 points on 108 goals and 90 assists. The Farmingdale, N.Y., native is just two points away from becoming the 21st player in ACC history to amass 200 career points.
Greer posted three goals and two assists, and now has 97 goals in just 37 career games. Greer's five points versus Delaware push the Whitby, Ontario, Canada product into 22nd place on Duke's all-time scoring chart with 132 career points on 97 goals and 35 assists. Crotty and Ross each had two goals for the Blue Devils while goalkeeper Dan Loftus was credited for 10 saves.
For the Blue Hens, Alex Smith was dominant at the X, winning 18-of-21 face-offs while securing five ground balls. LoManto and Kevin Kaminski led the offense with two goals apiece and goalie Tommy Scherr posted 16 saves.
Duke remains at home to play Bellarmine on Saturday at 3 p.m. Delaware travels to face Drexel on Saturday, April 7 at 3 p.m.
