No. 18 Duke Falls To No. 19 Wake Forest, 5-2

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 18th-ranked Duke women's tennis team fell to 19th-ranked Wake Forest by a score of 5-2 on Wednesday evening at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils fall to 10-7 (5-4 ACC), while the Demon Deacons improve to 13-6 (7-4 ACC).
Wake Forest kicked off the match by clinching the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils picked up the first win at No. 3 where freshman Amanda Granson and sophomore Jessi Robinson defeated Sierra Poske and Christine Simpson, 8-2, but the Demon Deacons were leading at both remaining doubles matches.
Ana Jerman and Sasha Kulikova then defeated freshman Elizabeth Plotkin and senior Tory Zawacki at the No. 2 spot, 8-3, and the deciding match was left to Ashlee Davis and Alexandra Hirsch, as the Deacon tandem upset the fifth-ranked Duke duo of sophomore Melissa Mang and senior Daniela Bercek, 8-6, at No. 1.
In singles, Wake Forest extended its lead to 3-0 after wins at the No. 1 and No. 4 spots. No. 69 Hirsch defeated No. 59 Bercek in straight 6-1 sets, while Kulikova posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Granson.
The Blue Devils cut the deficit to 3-1 when Plotkin defeated Jerman, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 3 position, but Wake then turned in another victory as 89th-ranked Ashlee Davis defeated 75th-ranked Mang at the No. 2 slot, 7-5, 6-4, to clinch the win for Wake Forest.
After the match was decided, Zawacki edged Poske at the fifth spot 6-2, 7-6, and senior Clelia Deltour fell to Simpson, 7-6, 6-3, at the bottom singles spot for Wake's fifth and final point of the match.
The Blue Devils will close out the regular season on the road this weekend with matches at 42nd-ranked N.C. State (April 14 - 12 p.m.) and 11th-ranked North Carolina (April 15 - 1 p.m.). The ACC Tournament is slated for April 19-22 in Cary, N.C.
