CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 18th-ranked Duke women's tennis team fell to 11th-ranked North Carolina, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at Cone-Kenfield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils end the regular season with a record of 10-9 (5-6 ACC), while the Tar Heels head into the postseason with a record of 20-7 (8-3 ACC).
North Carolina took the doubles point, losing just three games in three matches. The tandem of Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith got things started for the Tar Heels with an 8-0 sweep of senior Clelia Deltour and junior Tory Zawacki at No. 3. Moments later third-ranked Jenna Long and Sara Anundsen finished off an 8-1 win over the sophomore duo of Melissa Mang and Jessi Robinson.
The Blue Devil team of freshmen Amanda Granson and Elizabeth Plotkin were behind, 7-2, at the No. 2 position when the point was clinched.
Singles action was more competitive, but the Tar Heels scored three straight-set victories at the No. 1, 5 and 6 slots to take the win. Robinson fell to 64th-ranked Sanaz Marand, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6 and 75th-ranked Mang was defeated by sixth-ranked Long, 6-1, 6-4, at the top singles spot, before Anundsen sealed the win for the Tar Heels with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Deltour at No. 5.
With Plotkin and Granson leading at flights two and three, respectively, and Zawacki tied with 90th-ranked Austin Smith at No. 4, the match was halted following the clinching match.
With the win, North Carolina now leads 10.5-9.5 in the annual Carlyle Cup, an all-sports competition between the two schools. Duke has gained points in volleyball (1), men's soccer (1), fencing (1), men's cross country (1) , women's cross country (1), men's tennis (1), men's lacrosse (1) and women's basketball (2), while North Carolina secured points from men's basketball (2), football (2), women's soccer (1), men's swimming (1), women's swimming (1), wrestling (1), baseball (1) and women's tennis (1). The schools split the one point awarded for field hockey. The Carlyle Cup is sponsored by Carlyle & Co., a Greensboro-based jeweler, and fans can visit www.carlyleco.com for more information. Duke claimed the Cup in 2001, 2003 and 2004 while North Carolina earned the trophy in 2002, 2005 and 2006.
Duke will begin ACC Tournament play this week in Cary, N.C., at the Cary Tennis Park, with the first round set for Thursday, April 19. The tournament will run through Sunday, April 22, with the championship match set for Sunday at 11 a.m.
