DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 21-ranked Duke women's tennis team lost a close battle with 17th-ranked Florida State, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils end their home slate with a 6-1 record on their own courts.
With the loss, Duke falls to 10-6 (5-3 ACC), while Florida State improves to 12-6 (5-2 ACC). The Blue Devils lead the all-time series, 23-2.
Doubles play saw competitive matches across the board, as each team claimed a win before Duke clinched the point on the strength of senior Tory Zawacki and freshman Elizabeth Plotkin's 8-6 victory over Ania Rynarzewska and Lauren Macfarlane at the No. 2 spot.
At No. 1, the fifth-ranked duo of senior Daniela Bercek and sophomore Melissa Mang fell to the 19th-ranked tandem of Nicola Slater and Carolin Walter, 9-8 (7-5), while the Blue Devil duo of sophomore Jessi Robinson and freshman Amanda Granson posted an 8-2 win over Miranda Foley and Jessica Wente at the No. 3 position.
Florida State took the first singles match to even the score at one apiece, as Wente defeated Robinson, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 6 spot. Duke rebounded with senior Clelia Deltour's 6-4, 6-1 victory over Tapiwa Marobela at No. 5 to pull ahead 2-1, but the Seminoles retaliated with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2, as 99th-ranked Macfarlane defeated Plotkin, to make the score two all.
The final three matches would each go into third sets. The Seminoles took the first three-set match as they pulled ahead, 3-2, on Slater's 7-6, 2-6, 7-5 win over 75th-ranked Mang at the top singles flight, before Granson came through with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 win over No. 102 Rynasewska at the No. 3 spot to tie the match at 4-4.
Zawacki fought hard to the end of her three-set match, but Florida State's Walter prevailed, notching a 7-6, 6-7, 6-1 win at the No. 4 slot to clinch the match for the Seminoles.
The Blue Devils will close out the regular season on the road with matches at Wake Forest (April 11 - 5 p.m.), N.C. State (April 14 - 12 p.m.) and North Carolina (April 15 - 1 p.m.).
