BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Tory Zawacki and junior Melissa Mang have earned a spot in the doubles championship match after upsetting the top-seeded duo at the 2007 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Summer Championships, hosted by Indiana University.
Mang and Zawacki defeated Meritt Emery and Paulina Bigos (Alabama), 8-4, before posting an 8-3 victory over Christine Bader and Lindsey Lonergan (Michigan State) in the round of 16. The quarterfinals pitted the duo against Chisako Sugiyama and Whitney Taney (Michigan), as Mang and Zawacki came away with an 8-2 win to advance to the semifinals.
The Blue Devil duo met the top-seeded tandem of Keri Robinson and Lauren Lui (Northwestern) and recorded one of the biggest wins of the day, posting a tight 9-8 (4) victory to earn a spot in the championship match. Mang and Zawacki will face off against Taylor Marable and Rebecca Parks (Princeton) on Tuesday for the doubles title.
In the singles bracket, sixth-seeded Mang received a first round bye and then defeated Stephanie Stewart (high school competitor) in second round action, 6-1, 6-1. The New Orleans, La., native then had a tough match in the round of 32, as Neela Vaez (competing unattached) took her to a match tiebreaker before Mang pulled through, winning 6-2, 3-6, 10-6.
Mang squared off against Emery in the round of 16 and posted a 6-1, 6-3 win to advance to the quarterfinals, where she would fall to Ragini Acharya (William & Mary), 6-3, 6-2.
Zawacki opened championship play with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory over Yumi Matsuto (Western Michigan), then would get past Elizabeth Koback (Columbia), 5-4, ret., before being pitted against third-seeded Imke Reimers (Nebraska) in the round of 16. The Hilton Head, S.C., native then fell to Reimers, 7-5, 6-3.
The ITA National Summer Championships presented by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) are the pinnacle of the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, which was played at 23 regional sites throughout the country last month.
The singles and doubles champions from the ITA National Summer Championships earn wild cards into the first national tournaments of the 2006-07 collegiate tennis season - the Polo Ralph Lauren Men's and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in October.
