DURHAM, N.C. - Junior Melissa Mang, sophomore Elizabeth Plotkin, and the Duke duos of Mang and senior Tory Zawacki and Plotkin and freshman Ellah Nze are among the nation's best, as was released in the Preseason Women's Singles and Doubles Rankings, administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Mang sits at No. 72 in the preseason singles rankings, while Plotkin comes in at No. 102. Mang combines with Zawacki for a No. 22 doubles ranking and Plotkin teams with Nze for a preseason doubles ranking of No. 35.
A native of New Orleans, La., Mang has received All-ACC recognition in each of her two years at Duke and became the first Blue Devil since 2002 to garner ACC Freshman of the Year accolades in her rookie season (2006). She finished the 2007 season with a singles record of 11-9 in dual matches and a national ranking of No. 102. Mang combined with Daniela Bercek to form the 15th-ranked doubles tandem at season's end, as the duo went 15-6 overall.
Zawacki, an All-America selection in 2004, compiled a singles record of 10-10 in dual matches in 2007, including a 6-5 mark versus league opponents. The Hilton Head, S.C., native combined with numerous teammates in doubles play, having the most success with then-freshman Amanda Granson, as the tandem went 3-3 in dual match play.
Mang and Zawacki won the doubles championship at the 2007 ITA National Summer Championships this past August to become the first in Duke women's tennis history to win an ITA Summer Championship.
Plotkin went 11-9 in dual singles competition as a freshman in 2007, and combined with then-sophomore Jessi Robinson to post a dual doubles ledger of 5-3. After spending some time in the national singles listings, the San Francisco, Calif., native finished the year with a regional singles ranking of No. 28, and was also ranked in doubles with Bercek (No. 34) at season's end.
Nze is one of two freshmen on the Blue Devil roster in 2007-08, as Duke's incoming class was ranked No. 2 by TennisRecruiting.net in June. The Delray Beach, Fla., native was one of the top prospects for the class of 2011, as was Blue Devil classmate Reka Zsilinska.
The Duke women finished the 2007 season ranked fifth in the Southeast Region and 21st nationally, after posting a ledger of 12-11 (5-6 ACC) and reaching the NCAA Tournament Second Round.
