DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke men's and women's swimming and diving teams will kick off the 2008-09 campaign with a dual meet at UNC-Wilmington tomorrow, Oct. 18 in Wilmington, N.C at the Seahawk Natatorium.
The Blue Devil men are coming off a 3-7 (0-5 ACC) finish in 2007-08 and a ninth-place showing at the conference meet. The women were 8-4 (2-2 ACC) and finished sixth at ACC's. The women broke 12 school records and the men broke eight last season.
UNCW finished third at last season's Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships, returning a solid core of student-athletes from that campaign. In last season's meet between Duke and UNCW, both Blue Devil squads earned victories as the men prevailed, 187-109, and the women won, 199-96 at Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion.
“UNC Wilmington is an established and successful program,” said head coach Dan Colella. “It's always a great meet between us and everybody is ready to finally start competing.”
“We're going to mix it up this weekend, and give people an opportunity to swim some events that aren't necessarily their absolute specialty. This will give us a chance to evaluate our depth, but in essence what we're looking for tomorrow is how the team handles themselves ? the kind of energy that they have as a team ? and this is going to be an important start to the season.”
The meet kicks off at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
