WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.?Duke University sophomore Reka Zsilinszka continued her run in the singles draw today at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championship. Zsilinszka advanced to the semifinal round in singles, while she joined forces with Amanda Granson to move on to the semifinals in the doubles draw.
The doubles pair of Zsilinszka and Granson started the day off well with an 8-6 victory over Keri Wong and Ida Hedziselimovic of Clemson to advance to the semifinals. Facing off against the second-seeded duo of Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski from North Carolina, Zsilinszka and Granson fell behind early 5-2. They battled back, but were unable to overcome the early deficit in an 8-5 loss to the Tar Heel pair.
“I was really pleased with how they played,” head coach Jamie Ashworth said. “It's the first time they've played together and as a team I think they got better as the weekend went along. It's nice to know that I have options if we need to switch players around during the season and that's what they proved to me.”
In quarterfinal singles action, Zsilinszka pushed through another difficult test against Vanderbilt's Jackie Wu. She fell behind early 3-0 in the first set and rallied to earn the 7-5 victory to go up a set. Seeded fourth in the tournament, Zsilinszka rode that momentum and won the second set 6-3 to advance to the semifinals. She will take on second-seeded Laura Gioia of Furman in a semifinal match on Monday, Oct. 27.
“She definitely played well,” Ashworth said. “The girl she played has had a great fall, losing just once and getting a top-10 win. She made adjustments in her game, and for her to do that is important. She became more aggressive and moved inside the court. If she didn't make those changes, I don't think she would have won.”
Zsilinszka looks for her second consecutive appearance in the championship match after earning a spot her rookie season. She will play at 9 a.m., on Oct. 27.
