DURHAM, N.C. ? GoDuke.com recently sat down with goalkeeper Brendan Fitzgerald for his senior profile. Fitzgerald, a native of Boxford, Mass., discusses his favorite memory from his collegiate career, his favorite TV shows, his pregame rituals, plus much more.
GoDuke.com: If you could have dinner with four people from history (dead or alive), who would it be and why?
Brendan Fitzgerald: Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, Frank Sinatra and Ted Williams. I just think that group would lend itself to an interesting dinner conversation.
GD: If you could go on tour with any musician or group who would it be and why?
BF: The Rolling Stones; its not that I'm that into their music, but I think that I'd have the most fun with those guys, even though they are getting old.
GD: Who is your favorite professional player in your sport?
BF: Steven Gerrard of England and Liverpool; he is such a good leader, does everything with class and has the best shot I've ever seen.
GD: What is your dream job?
BF: Owning my own sports franchise.
GD: What magazine cover would you most like to be featured on?
BF: Men's Health.
GD: What is playing on your iPod right now?
BF: T.I. and Dropkick Murphys.
GD: What are your pregame rituals?
BF: Before every game the goalkeepers have a light training session in the morning to get focused for that night. I also do some physical therapy exercises and play with a reflex ball to get sharp.
GD: Who is the best athlete you have every played with or against in your soccer career?
BF: Blake Camp, who was a senior on the team when I was a freshman.
GD: What is one thing people don't know about you?
BF: I am a licensed bartender.
GD: What's the best advice you've ever received?
BF: Never give up and work hard. They're big-time clich?s, but the best advice usually is.
GD: What is your favorite place to hang out at Duke/Durham?
BF: My apartment.
GD: Why do you wear your number?
BF: I've never had a number I used throughout my whole career. 22 was just the best number available at the time.
GD: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
BF: I have no idea, but I like that.
GD: If you could be any superhero, who would it be and why?
BF: Superman...he's got the steady girlfriend.
GD: What is your favorite TV show?
BF: It's a toss up between How I Met Your Mother and Friday Night Lights.
GD: What's your favorite memory to date of your college career?
BF: Beating Boston College 1-0 in double overtime in front of all my family and friends the other week was pretty awesome.
