DURHAM, N.C. – A trio of goalscorers, backed up by a clean sheet, pushed Duke men's soccer to a 3-0 victory over Wofford on Tuesday night.
Sol Arbib,
Ethan Congleton and
Jack Ottley put their names on the scoresheet, while
Max Deisenhofer tallied his first collegiate shutout in goal.
Congleton and Ottley continued their team-leading efforts in goal scoring, as the pair of freshmen upped their total to five tallies apiece. Arbib opened the scoring in the first half and Congleton was credited with an assist, giving him a three-point night for the second time this season.
In goal, Deisenhofer made two saves en route to the clean sheet. Defender Nikolai Bull Jorgensen was impactful on both ends of the pitch, anchoring Duke's defensive line and securing two assists.
Jonah Wolf also picked up a point, as he set up Congleton's goal with the service on a free kick in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first shot of the contest came off the foot of Wofford, in the eighth minute, but was not on frame. Duke's Jack Ottley forced the first save of the night, in the 18th minute.
- Max Deisenhofer tallied his first save of the night shortly after, turning away an attempt with just under 25 minutes remaining in the first half.
- The Blue Devils opened the scoring at the 42-minute mark, as Sol Arbib's header found the top corner. Arbib was on the receiving end of a set piece design that featured Ethan Congleton's service finding the head of Nikolai Bull Jorgensen, who flicked a header to the six-yard box, where Arbib was waiting.
- Another goal off a set piece doubled Duke's lead less than 15 minutes into the second half, as Congleton tucked home a cross from Jonah Wolf.
- Neither team was able to generate a strong offensive push through the next phase of the contest, as the score remained 2-0 in favor of Duke at the halfway point of the second frame.
- A loose ball in transition found its way past Wofford's goalkeeper in the 76th minute and Jack Ottley rolled the ball into the empty net for Duke's third and final goal of the night. Bull Jorgensen was credited with his second assist of the night and Arbib picked up his first point for his effort to set up the goal.
