DURHAM, N.C. – Duke men's soccer jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 45 minutes, but the visiting Stanford Cardinal responded with three goals after intermission, claiming a 3-2 victory on Friday at Freeman Field at Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils (4-7, 0-4 ACC) were led on offense by a pair of freshmen,
Jack Ottley and
Ethan Congleton, who both found the back of the net. Ottley added to his team-leading point total, with 12 on four goals and four assists. Congleton secured his fourth goal of the season and is tied with Ottley for the team lead in the category.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stanford tallied the early offensive chances, with a pair of shots in the opening nine minutes.
- The Blue Devils moved possession into their attacking third and opened the scoring in the 11th minute, as Jack Ottley blasted a right-footed shot into the far corner. Emmanuel Frimpong was credited with the assist after corralling a deflected cross and finding Ottley.
- The Cardinal began to up the pressure, finding the woodwork on two separate occasions and forcing multiple saves by Duke's keeper, Colin Gallagher.
- Duke closed the half on the front foot, as Ethan Congleton put home a penalty kick with 49 seconds remaining in the first half.
- The visitors equalized in the first 15 minutes of the second half, with two quick goals separated by just 37 seconds inside the 58th minute.
- Ottley nearly put Duke back in front but his strike in the 73rd minute rang the left post.
- An own goal off a Duke defender gave the Cardinal a 3-2 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining in the contest.
- A late penalty was awarded to Stanford with 43 seconds remaining, but Gallagher turned it away. The Blue Devils were unable to find another scoring chance, as the scoreline finished at 3-2 in favor of Stanford.
